Introduction to PowerBirth® Since 1999
PowerBirth is about Natural Childbirthing & Self-reliance in Childbirth
PowerBirth is about having a Peaceful Childbirth
PowerBirth is about Effortlessness
"PowerBirth allowed me to remain focused and I felt I had a completely peaceful mind. It was such a natural process, effortlessness is the best description of what I experienced. I felt absolutely empowered and self reliant. The contemplation of drugs never once crossed my mind and I experienced the greatest sense of achievement" Allison 1st birth Feb 09
Over 2000 of mothers have attended PowerBirth and a large number of them have enjoyed a well managed, calm and natural childbirth. We have over the years collected 100s of wonderful and empowering birth stories to share with you.
The PowerBirth® Program offers Mind/Body Training for Childbirth. It began in 1999 with one Prenatal Yoga class which quickly developed over the next two years blending Prenatal Yoga & Mind Training. PowerBirth® was registered in May 2003 and the name was chosen to reflect the experience of power many mothers feel during their childbirth, feeling in charge, being self-reliant, more confident and feeling strengthened by their childbirth. PowerBirth® Program comprises:
PowerBirth® 5-week Training Course
PowerBirth® Practice Classes
PowerBirth® Couple Workshop
"Yoga during my pregnancy taught me deep breathing, relaxation, inner calm and it gave me positive thoughts and inner strength. Yoga helped me be and stay in control in labour with no pain relief. It was a most enjoyable experience" Suzie
What PowerBirth® is NOT
PowerBirth® is NOT HypnoBirthing® or calmbirth® . PowerBirth does not teach hypnotic states or advocate specific breathing methods for childbirth. PowerBirth does not teach you to breathe through pain or to cope with pain. We learn NOT to produce pain in the first place, as PowerBirth starts from the premise that a contraction does not have to be painful, it can be, but does not have to!
PowerBirth is NOT based on other programmes. Its teaching is directly linked to the author's effortless childbirth.
PowerBirth® is based on the author's personal experience of a self-reliant, stress-free, painless, natural, quick and easy homebirth. It supports the beliefs that childbirth does not need to be painful, that a labouring woman does not need to suffer and that we all as women have the potential to experience a positive childbirth, free of stress, fear and suffering. We have all the resources we need within ourselves and it is a matter of being able to access and utilise them. PowerBirth® emphasises the need to understand the mind-body connection and how they influence each other.
The mind centering techniques presented in PowerBirth Mind Training are primarily to train the mind to remain in the state of Focus & Relaxed Awareness during childbirth so that the Mind does not interfere with the natural physiological process of childbirth. Mothers may choose to use or not to use the centering techniques in childbirth, however the Mind Training teaches the mind to remain in a peaceful state without using techniques. The breathing practice in PowerBirth is primarily to reconnect to proper breathing so that the mother naturally breathes well in childbirth. PowerBirth is about developing inner awareness so that the mother will be able to gain knowledge from within when she is childbirthing. PowerBirth is about cultivating self-reliance so that the mother can take care of herself in childbirth and have no fear. PowerBirth is about effortlessness and non-doing in childbirth.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
You do not need to have done Yoga before BUT you need to come with an open mind to allow yourself to explore new ideas and possibilities, and the willingness to re-evaluate your image of birth and your beliefs if necessary. We have found that learning 2 different systems can be confusing as well as conflicting. For these reasons if you have already completed a childbirth preparation program (other than antenatal classes from your hospital) we advise that you do not book into PowerBirth® Program but attend Simply Prenatal Yoga instead. Unless you are dissatisfied with a previous method it is best that you stay with your previous teachings.
Who comes to the PowerBirth® Program?
Women who have been recommended by a friend or a professional, women who are expecting their 1st or 2nd baby and want to optimise their childbirth and/or are aiming for a natural childbirth, women who are coming back with their 2nd or 3rd pregnancy, women who are disappointed with their 1st, 2nd childbirth and want to increase their chance of a normal/natural labour.
